One of the pioneers of the diet revolution in the early part of 2000 is the Atkins Diet, a program created by cardiologist Dr. Robert Atkins for the patients of his private clinic. Because it is so very effective, the diet program has since evolved to include famous celebrities as part of its millions of followers.
The diet program is actually based on the book that Atkins published in 1999. Aptly titled, “Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution, the book created a world-wide sensation with people taking in pros and cons position. Despite the opinions of his critics, the book became an overnight hit in bookstores nationwide. In fact, Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution topped the New York Times Bestsellers list, which is perhaps the most prestigious bestsellers book list in the country. What is more, it has stayed in the list for seven years. Truly a great fit for a diet book.
Atkins’ Diet Revolution is made up of seven chapters. It explains the basics of the diet program. It also contains tips on leading a healthy lifestyle in the 21st century as well as different recipes that dieters can whip up at home.
One of the advantages of the Atkins diet program is the fact that people are allowed to choose the food that they will eat and to prepare their meals themselves. This is less expensive than having foods delivered to you. Being able to choose the food that you will eat increases the will and commitment to stay into the program.
The diet is based on the rationale that taking in less carbohydrates in meals can help in the reduction of weight. This is because the water content in the body is flushed off when the body uses it as an alternative source of energy.
The same goes with the fat cells, which are temporarily used for energy in lieu of the missing carbohydrates. As you well know, both fats and carbohydrates are potential sources of energy. The body just prefers the carbohydrates as it can easily be burned as opposed to fats, which has a really complex structure.
Another advantage of the Atkins program is the fact that it is a very good diet for people with diabetes and a whole lot more. In fact, according to many dieticians, the Atkins Diet is the only diet that can prevent the incidence of high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well as obesity, which are all precursors of the Type 2 form of diabetes.
Obesity is becoming a major problem especially to people who work mentally but not physically. A sound body makes a sound mind so people started realizing the problem with obesity and awareness is spreading all around. Weight loss programs are in peak now which concentrates more on popular diets.
When talking about popular diets, there are three popular dieting techniques which are much effective. They are,
South Beach Diet: this diet is introduced by a cardiologist named Arthur Agaston in Miami, Florida. The ultimate aim of this diet is to alter a person’s eating habit. This technique advises us to have goof fats and carbohydrates and also to avoid the wrong one. The initial part of this dieting technique is to avoid food with high glycemic carbs. They also suggest, taking more vegetables meats, nuts, cheese and eggs is better than having bread, fruits or potatoes. Three meals per day are allowed with snacks too.
There are three phases in this diet. First phase is for two week. Second phase allows us to eat small amount of fruit and grain food. The third and final phase is the maintenance phase in which three servings of fruit and three servings of grain foods are allowed. But remember, before entering the final phase you should have achieved the goal weight.
Atkins Diet: this diet is named after its founder Robert Atkins. This idea mainly focuses on moderating the intake of carbohydrates. In other words, to eliminate carbohydrate rich foods as they attack the body’s blood sugar. This increases the hunger pangs because of low blood sugar. In this technique, instead of focusing on body glucose, the stored body fat is maintained. Like the previous mentioned diet, Atkins diet also has three phases.
In first phase you are restricted to have foods which are rich in carbs. Because of these restrictions, the body weight can be reduced up to 10lbs. In the second phase there will be no restrictions in taking carb rich food. But the interesting fact is that, even by taking carb rich food, your weight still loses. In the final phase, there will be a analysis on how much carb food you can take on a day without increasing weight. With that measurement you can continue the daily life.
Best Life Diet: this diet is well known and has made good review results. Best life diet does not restrict oneself from eating a particular variety of food. But ones choice of food will be gradually changed. This dieting technique does not involve any calorie measurements and other sort of things. But self control should be there for the dieter. He/she should look for the weight and should manage the diet. Complete responsibility is over the dieter and the steps are gradual which makes this diet a popular one.
Now a day’s people are aware of obesity and so many weight losing programs are emerging in a rapid way today. Be cautious in selecting the program which suits you the best. Consult with a physician before getting yourself engaged in a program.
Obesity is becoming a big problem for mankind. People are in search of techniques to reduce weight. Internet is a big stress reliever as they make this search easier. The best way to lose weight is dieting. There are plenty of popular diets available in internet. Picking the best and suitable one among them is a big task for the dieters.
A diet can be constructed by anyone and without much experience or knowledge they may post in internet. So consult a physician before getting in to a diet. Diet is just about taking healthy food and avoiding foods which are rich in calorie value. Making a diet plan is an easy job. But following diet is the difficult task.
If you are not much aware of how to make a diet, then have a look at these tips which will help you in picking a right diet. Some of the popular diets are,
Atkins Diet – This is a very popular diet which is followed by many dieters across the globe. The reason behind the popularity of this diet is, it is carbohydrate free and rich in protein. Dieters can eat a lot of meat that will give them energy and protein. But the drawback behind this technique is, its more expensive when compared with other diets.
GI Diet – glycemic index of food is the main focus of GI Diet. During this diet, the amount of glucose in body is checked regularly as body burns glucose quickly. This results in a healthy body and keeps energy for longer time.
Weight Watchers – this is also one of the famous diets followed across the world. In this diet, each and every food is given a point. At the end of the day, these points are calculated and modifications are made in the diet. Foods which are rich in carbohydrates are given maximum points. These points should be neither low nor higher. It should be balanced.
Grapefruit Diet –this is completely a free and easy diet you could found on the internet. Grape fruit is used like a medicine to burn the fat contents of the body. This also reduces the excess calorie rate and at the same time it gives enough strength to the body.
Every day a new type of diet is introduced in internet. The most popular among them is listed here. Even though surfing through web gives you a good idea over diet, visualizing and practical applications of them will give you more confidence. That can be brought up by a total loser reality show. In this TV show, they show things visually and prove the dieting techniques.
The simple tip is don’t mess up with things, just try to reduce the amount of calories that you take in also at the same time, try to burn the calories as much as possible. This needs a regular exercise. Dieting without proper exercise or exercise without proper diet will not help you to reduce weight. Both of them should be equally maintained for a healthier life.
In this video, which is a reaction to friend and fellow firefighter being treated for cancer and venturing into a vegan video (and being slandered and attacked – tinyurl.com ), I respond to the theory that consumption of animal products (aka delicious meat, eggs, and cheese) on a ketogenic diet like Atkins leads to a higher cancer risk. First the detractors and their comments: tinyurl.com “Another Harvard study showed that women with the highest intake of animal fat seem to have over a 75% greater risk of developing breast cancer.[285] ” As one Harvard School of Public health researcher noted, because of the meat content, two years on the Atkins Diet “could initiate a cancer. It could show up as a polyp in 7 years and as colon cancer in ten. The most comprehensive report on diet and cancer in history was published in 1997. It took over four years to complete, reviewing 4500 studies from thousands of researchers across the globe. After all that work, what was their number one recommendation? “Choose a diet that is predominantly plant based, rich in a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans with minimally processed starchy foods.”[491] In other words, essentially the opposite of the Atkins Diet. In the January issue of Scientific American it was noted: “Cancer is most frequent among those branches of the human race where carnivorous habits prevail.” In response to these studies, correlation does not equal causality. What else do these carnivorous, which is just more name calling since we are more omnivorious) also eat or do? Do they eat bread with their meat? Do they talk more on their cell phone? In this Atkins Diet Quick Hits video, I deal with the question similar to the zero carb video, but slightly different. Do we eliminate all sugar from our diet with Atkins? The answer is surprising to some that it is no. What we do eliminate is ADDED sugar, and limit the natural sugars that is found in food. You are still eating natural sources of sugar like sucrose or lactose in things like pumpkin or tomatoes or cream cheese, but you have restricted that amount to a level where your blood …
One of my good friends on the Atkins Diet, Izaboutime, talked to me regarding a scare he had. He was following the diet religiously and working out fiendishly in the gym. In that time, he sweated the potassium of his body and put himself into a hypokalemic state. He thought he was having a heart attack. The post script to his tale is he found out what it was and wanted to be sure others knew as well. That was why this video was created. Hypokalemia health.google.com www.nlm.nih.gov en …

I have a 20 BMI but I’d like to lose just a few pounds, and it’s really hard. I want to restrict calories to 1400 a day and exercise. I was just wondering if the Atkins diet is likely to work for someone who isn’t overweight.
NO OPINIONS ON THE DIET OR ANYTHING PLEASE. JUST THE FACTS Thanks! 10 pts!

Really? I have been doing it wrong all this time! Who knew I wasn’t supposed to have this delicious strawberries, flax, and cream cheese dessert on a low carb diet? It goes back to “no carb” vs. “low carb” misunderstanding.

One of the problems with diet where the author is gone is trying to understand what he meant or that the diet remains a line in the sand. There is a growing controversy in the Atkins Diet community on just how many vegetables are allowed on Induction. Is it 3 cups or 12-15g per day? Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002) says multiple times: “3. Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. In this Atkins Diet Quick Hits video deal the question “how fast did I lose the weight?” and “if you lost it slower, do you think loose skin would be less prevalent?” I responded that I averaged about 4.3 pounds per week during much of the weight loss phase, and over 3 pounds throughout the 15 months of the diet. I advised against intentionally slowing down the diet by overeating or eating when you aren’t hungry. I do HOWEVER recommend eating above one’s Basal Metabolic Rate to avoid …
** Photos and video from my 2009 Des Moines Half Marathon at the end ** One of the comments I get from time is why or how dare I may comments regarding weight loss. “Am I a doctor?” The associated statement is if I were, I would never dare support the Atkins Diet. In the this video of the “Atkins Diet Quick Hits” series, I comment on a question I got from a well-meaning low carber. His question was on the amount of what he was eating. I took his question and ran with it though to a different topic. Starvation mode dieting is never good, and similar is zero carb dieting. I am pretty convinced that for most people going zero carb is an unnecessary step. Sure there are some very metabolically resistant and / or people suffering with hyperinsulinemia. For …
In this video, I deal with the importance of water in a low carb or specifically Atkins Diet. Like any diet, water is important to make you fill full, keep you hydrated for exercise, and to quench your thirst. Its importance can not be stressed enough in a low carb diet though as its additional benefits, such as: * its role in metabolizing fat * its role in reducing Induction Flu symptoms * its role in flushing the toxins and by-products (like ketones) from the system through your kidneys I …

I produced another Atkins Diet Quick Hits videos. In this one, I deal with question of how long to stay on Induction and what the warning signs to progress to the Ongoing Weight Loss Phase. I normally get this question from those with lots to lose or those people who become carb phobic. My response normally goes – you can stay on Induction for a really long time, but you should progress to OWL when you hit one of the warning conditions. Here are the warning signs: 1. poor exercise …
In this video I reply to a user on why I was successful when others can struggle. Was it easy for me or was it sheer willpower? To me, it was a matter of the big 4 items: * Successful role models * Participant in Support Group (benefit from their wisdom) * Accountability * Other Concrete goals Other things that helped me: * a bit of competitive spirit with weight loss * Knowing myself and my ability to NOT withstand cheats * finding others who “blazed the trail” before me and were kind of …
In this the second half of the stall series, I deal with what should be the reaction of those who aren’t losing inches or pounds for more than 4 weeks. Note: these are not for those that had a bad week or didn’t lose in the last two week. Here’s a synopsis on what to try: 1. Take your measurements (make sure you are in a stall) 2. Start a food diary (Fitday, SparkPeople) 3. Evaluate what you are eating 4. Tweak exercise – “try 5″ 5. Cut out certain groups (dairy, aspartame, caffiene, newly …
I deal with the question how to determine what your goal weight should be. Certainly the problems with using BMI are well known. I deal with the question by a viewer who like I was sick of eggs and bacon, and was looking for alternative breakfast items. My criteria for a good low carb breakfast is: * has to be quick to make * has to be easy to make * has to provide enough nutrition for morning activities and mid day exercise I also suggest the valuable step of prepping for breakfast the night or the week before by chopping the vegetables or cooking the meat beforehand to expand your options. With that in mind, there …

Consider Psyllium husks in form of capsules or powder (1-2 TBS per day). Note: Remember to …
Is eating out at restaurants possible on Atkins Diet or while low carbing? I certainly go out to eat a few times each week and can say conclusively there are a number of options for low carb’ers when eating out. The most important thing is to not be shy with servers about questions about the menu or in asking for substitutions. In this long Quick Hits video, I discuss whether kids or teenagers (as my daughter oft reminds me) should follow the Atkins Diet as prescribed or a more moderate low carb or carb conscious plan. I believe as parents we are called to teach our kids a healthy way of eating, and while acknowledging kids’ environment and choices, we should make …

How many calories a day should on the Atkins Diet? Does it matter? Don’t criticize the diet please I am 5′4 and I weight 145 right now. I just had a baby and I do work out I just want to lose weight faster.
A few years ago my mom did the diet and she lost 100 lbs and she has still kept the weight off. Like i said don’t answer if you are going to criticize the diet. I’m asking for facts, not opinions on the diet.
Should you count Calories as well as Carbs on Induction? Do Calories matter on the Atkins Diet? Perhaps, but more importantly should you obsess over them like an accoutant with the company’s books? That answer is unequivocally no. During Induction IMO, you are relearning your way of eating and living and are already denying yourself former comfort foods. Adding the burden of counting Calories on top of that seems prohibitive and fraught with delving back into a Low Cal, Low fat mindset …
This video deals the question “So when can I eat oatmeal again?” that I sometimes get. The answer is you guessed it a personal one, “it depends.” The main goals of the Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) phase is to determine two things: * your reaction to the new foods you add back into your diet * your Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing (CCLL) There is also an understood goal as well by the name — that is weight loss continues to happen. Who would want to do something on a diet with 100 pounds …

In this video, I deal with the subject of goal weight fixation. Being focused on getting yourself to goal is a good thing, but NOT at the expense of ignoring other things to be learned along the way. In the fourth video of the “Atkins Diet Quick Hits” series, I deal with a question I get from new people asking about a certain lower carb food or frankenfood and if it is ok due to its low carb. It is often not on the Acceptable Foods List or filled with ingredients not on the list. This is when I get into the discussion why the first phase of the diet is more than just reduce your carbs to less than 20g per day. Here are the main goals of any Induction phase: 1.) Get into ketosis and see …
In this third video of my exercise series, I detail one of the more important questions to those who exercise on the Atkins Diet — how to stay hydrated while exercise. The easy answer is drink water, but on a hot day while sweating that is not always the best answer as one loses key minerals, like Sodium, Potassium, and other electrolytes. Non-low carbers have it easy as they can turn to any readily available Electrolyte replacement drink, like Gatorade or Powerade. Even those that …

In this video, I deal with another viewer comment on why do people not lose weight or suffer weight loss stalls / plateaus. The first answer is “is it really a stall?”, “Have you lost any inches not just pounds?”, and “Have you not lost in more than 4 weeks?” If you satisfy these above question, this video is for you. Here is list of reasons that I go into in this video: 1.) Eating too many carbs (hidden carbs / underestimating) 2.) Undereating – starvation mode dieting 3.) Dehydration 4 …
aka “Temptation, Visualization, Success… Oh My! (Part 2)” This video is the second in the Temptation Resistance series. Accountability is probably one of the most helpful suggestions I have for new dieters. Being accountable to oneself and to others absolutely helps fight the temptations. So rather than being a negative, the cynics, which I readily admit I was at one …
In this video, I deal with a much overlooked section of the Induction phase (and latter phases). It covers the daily sweetener limit. Dr. Atkins recommends no more than three servings or packets of sweeteners per day. That means each Diet Coke with Splenda or packet of Splenda in your coffee is counted against that limit. Why did he set the limit at three when the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) levels set by the FDA are usually much higher 6-10 cans of soda for Saccharin or Splenda depending …

I am going to do the induction phase of the atkins diet (2 weeks) to kick start my weight loss – however, can anyone tell me what will happen when I return to a healthy, low fat diet afterwards? I don’t want to put any weight loss back on again.
I KNOW the best way is to exercise and eat a healthy diet from the outset, but the above is an option I am considering, I’d appreciate it if anyone who has done similar can tell me of their experiences.
This video is in response to a question I received: “I’ve been very faithful and am over the induction flu, but now I don’t have ANY energy. I slept great last night and I feel like I could lay down right now and take a nap. I’m not skipping meals, I’m taking a multivitamin, and am drinking loads of water. What can I do to get my energy back up?” My response to her was you are still early into the diet, so your body is still probably adjusting to the new diet. However, if you want to try …

Atkins Diet Quick Hits – Alcohol One of the questions I get quite often is can I drink during Induction or at all on Atkins. This question is probably least hard for me to answer as I have given much of alcohol except for maybe a couple times a year. With that, during Induction you definitely should not drink alcohol. It is only 14 days long, and certainly you can last 14 days without drinking. Why? The same reason we restrict everything else in Induction — get you back to a simple diet or …

That is social and psychological aspects of losing weight or why you may be self-sabotaging yourself from losing weight.
